About this guide

I Want Out of the US: A Guide to Getting Out of the U.S. explains how US citizens can get residency and a second citizenship abroad without a $500k golden visa. Every country guide is built from official sources (government sites, laws and fee tables), with each fact labeled as verified, conflicting or unverified. The guide was started by a naturalized US citizen who later became a citizen of Peru through the company-formation route; the author stays anonymous.

Start with the country comparison, read how to choose, or jump to a guide: Argentina · Brazil · Colombia · Ecuador · Peru · Portugal · Uruguay · Mexico · Paraguay · Spain.

How we treat dual citizenship

Naturalizing abroad does not end US citizenship unless done voluntarily with the intention of giving it up (8 USC 1481; State Department). We recommend countries that let you keep both, and list countries that require renunciation separately. Don't sign anything stating you intend to give up US citizenship beyond the formula a country requires, and always use your US passport to enter and leave the US.
